Mar 13, 2006 · I want to know the reasons of creating weep hole on the piping lines dummy support? ... (IF the code allows it) is the most sensible way to hang the pipe. A weep hole from 1/8" to 1/4" is bored in to the stancion pipe support( usually about 2 or 3 inches from the plate) where one end is welded to the plate and the other end is welded to the 90 ...

Jul 10, 2002 · The same issue comes up in piping system fabrication when welding on a dummy leg or a base elbow. You need the "weep hole" there too. It keeps the welded appurtenance from becoming a pressure vessel AND it allows the circumferential weld(s) to be finished without the weld metal being blown back into the welder's face by expanding gas/air.

I have welded hundreds without a "weep/vent" hole and all you get is a slight "pop" of the molten metal at the closure of the weld when the heated air is finally trapped. If it was to have PWHT I would probably agree that a "weep/vent" hole would be required - (how many dummy legs / supports have PWHT ?).

Question now is for non-insulated lines. To avoid direct contact of dummy to elbow, we are thinking of three options: 1) provide additional pad on elbow where dummy can be welded. 2) Replace the dummy with a shaped steel. 3) Offset the support to pipe run instead of elbow where normal pad plate can be welded + dummy pipe support.

May 09, 2015 · On a construction project once, we built a "dummy leg" (a piece of pipe that welds onto a larger pipe to support it) and it set outside for a while and collected a lot of rainwater. When it was put on the supporting pipe, a steam line, they didn't dump out the water before welding it tight. ... Welding it "tight" (no weep hole)

Jan 08, 2011 · Debasis / MJ Cronin Adding to MJC's observation - which weep holes by and large serve the purpose of weep hole for reinforcement pad welds or for structural pipe support welds for vessels which are not supporting by skirting arrangements- weep hole is also used for pneumatic test of welds of pads after construction welding and during pressure test of a vessel before commissoning.

This is a "Weep Hole" and may have multiple functions. Sometimes also called Tell Tale hole or Vent hole. Opinions about the use of this hole varies, and therefore I give 2 possible uses of a weep hole: By threading the hole, a test gauge can be thread for a "air/soap" test to check for leakage. The thread, mostly1/4" NPT will be used.
