The latest versions of rhino has E4X support based on DOM rather the xbeans and more or less support efficient marshalling between E4X XML objects and DOM. I have no idea whether or not the repackaged version of Rhino used by IDM has been kept up-to-date (to at least 1.7R1) - it wouldn't surprise me too much either way.
