Oct 01, 2007 · In this case, both the WEP key and the SSID are generated from the Netopia router’s serial number — and sufficient bits are accidentally exposed in the SSID to enable computation of the WEP key. (This is kind of moot in many cases, since the serial number is also exposed in the MAC address, in even more detail.)

Exactly. The default WEP key supplied by those old eircom routers isn't your biggest worry OP. ANY WEP key is simple to crack and takes minutes only. Use WPA2 if can and if your current router doesn't support it, get a new router!

When you get a wireless router from Eircom, you are also given a disc which has a program on it to help you generate your WEP key. With the program loaded on your computer, you simply enter the serial key on the side of the router and bang, you have the WEP key – to write down and take away. In my mind, this is a huge security risk.
