Links2 used to have JavaScript, but support was poor, so they decided to remove it. w3m-js is an experimental patch to add JavaScript to w3m, but the link is broken, so we are left with elinks. If you just want a text based web-browser, and do not care about JavaScript, you can just install links2, w3m, or elinks with apt-get.

Mar 09, 2012 · I've posted similar in other forums but can't find a solution. If ECMA (javascript) is enabled elinks crashes. Then won't even start. I have to edit ~/.elinks/elinks.conf to disable javascript before I can start elinks. I've just installed Fedora 16 64 bit. The mozilla "spidermonkey" javascript is installed and works fine in Firefox.

Before you can compile ELinks with Lua support, you must compile and install Lua. The following instructions are for a Linux system. People on other systems should try to enable popen support, but this is not necessary (you will lose a bit of functionality though). Download and unpack the Lua tar.gz or zip somewhere. cd into the lua directory.
