Apr 12, 2014 · It is extremely annoying that in ESXi 5.5 VMWare dropped support of even booting off so-called "software RAID" controllers. I just tried upgrading one of my hosts from 5.1 to 5.5. This host has a pair of 60GB SSDs in RAID-1 on mobo built-in Marvell controller used for ESXi booting, scratch and local cache, and was working beautifully under 5.1.

Mar 20, 2018 · Install vmware in first HDD. Add the other 2 HDDs as 2 seperate drives to esxi. When you create a guest vm create 2 identitcal vmfs volumes and attach it to the guest vm. use software raid when you install guest os. Guest os will have redundancy in this case, but not for esxi hypervisor.3/5(2)

Nov 20, 2014 · I'm going to build a vsphere box. I have a question. Can you software raid storage presented to the hypervisor? Instead of using motherboard RAID to create a RAID1 array can I present two vanilla hard drives to ESX and then present mirrored storage to VMs?
