VMware ESXi 5.5 Compatible PCIe USB Cards VMware Communities

    https://communities.vmware.com/thread/503971
Mar 10, 2015 · Called VMware support and they refused to help me since I paid for "subscription support" not "technical support" (BS if you ask me). They wanted $300 for a one time service fee to answer my question. I wish I could just extract the driver out of a 5.1 copy of ESXi and inject that into my 5.5 build, but that's a little beyond my knowledge.

PCI and PCIe Devices and ESXi Using the VMware DirectPath I/O feature to pass through a PCI or PCIe device to a virtual machine results in a potential security vulnerability. The vulnerability can be triggered by buggy or malicious code, such as a device driver, running in privileged mode in the guest OS.

Add a PCI Device in the vSphere Web Client

Verify that the PCI devices are connected to the host and marked as available for passthrough. However, if your ESXi host is configured to boot from a USB device, you should disable the USB controller for passthrough. VMware does not support USB controller passthrough for ESXi hosts that boot from USB devices or SD cards connected through USB channels.

Add a PCI Device in the vSphere Web Client

See the vSphere Networking documentation. However, PCI passthroughs should not be enabled for ESXi hosts that are configured to boot from USB devices. When PCI vSphere DirectPath I/O devices are available to a virtual machine, you cannot suspend, migrate with vMotion, or take or restore Snapshots of such virtual machines.
