Dec 06, 2006 · My guess is that the vmxnet driver simply does not support ethtool, or only supports a small subset that makes sense. For example, I think, based on looking at the source, that "ethtool operation 31" is an attempt to set the hardware to enable TCP Segementation Offload. That wouldn't apply to a virtual NIC since TSO requires hardware support.
