(attribute) data types into relational, object-oriented, or other DBMS data models; they can be implemented as data blades, cartridges, etc. for extensible DBMSs. We expect these spatio-temporal data types to play a similarly fundamental role for spatio-temporal databases as spatial data types have played for spatial databases.

The main drawback of this approach is that it requires executing join operations among the dimension tables in order to produce complete spatial information. The use and maintenance of data under such an

This thesis investigates the specifics of modeling data for spatial, temporal and spatio-temporal applications (STOSTA) in the presence of object-relational database systems (ORDBS). This work was motivated by actual scientific and commercial applications. Some of those are described in detail in order to show how these applications benefit

Therein we identify three general alternatives for providing RDBMS support for spatio-temporal data: 1. Recasting the problem to employ existing RDBMS support for spatial data, 2. Loosely coupling a STAM to the RDBMS, and 3. Tightly coupling a STAM inside the RDBMS via a relational mapping.Cited by: 22

geometries associated with objects in a database [Gü94]. Temporal databases have focused on extending the knowledge kept in a database about the current state of the real world to include the past, in the two senses of “the past of the real world” (valid time) and “the past states of the database” (transaction time) [TCG+93].

Currently, RDBMS support for such spatio-temporal data is limited and inadequate for non-trivial datasets, and most existing spatiotemporal access methods cannot be readily integrated into a RDBMS. This technical report proposes an approach for spatio-temporal storage, indexing and query support that can be fully integrated within any off-the-shelf RDBMS.
