Well, i tried your suggestion. Created an MXF with JPEG 2000 video and a 5.1 PCM audio. Then, I was able to import it back into Premiere pro, which is great. THen I used FFMPEG to simply rewrap the same video and audio into MXF OP1a. No change to video or audio. The file looks exactly same in FFPROBE. Premiere does not want to import it.

Summary of the bug: Encoding jpeg2000 in mxf fails. "codec not currently supported in container". This combination of codec and container is popular in some media preservation environments and may be worth supporting.

Just adding a note here that muxing jpeg2000 into mxf is defined in SMPTE 422m (which defines how MXF can accomplish something similar as the 'colr' atom in other containers).

The ffmpeg prores encoder definitely doesn’t support this, which is why it does the conversion to RGB. It may be possible to simply re-wrap the JPEG2000 frames into a QuickTime .mov file (QuickTime, like AVI, MKV and MXF, is just a container after all). But I’m not sure what advantage this would give you over the original MXF files.
