    Any email account that offers POP3 or IMAP will work in Outlook, plus Hotmail/Live (it supports both POp3 and the outlook hotmail connector). Gmail supports both pop3 and imap and does a good job at filtering spam. I have no idea what other free POP3 and IMAP accounts exist or how well they filter spam - gmail meets my needs for a free account.
