I've got a detached garage which was built in the 1940s and I'm trying to figure out whether it's safe to add an attic ladder and use the attic space for storage. The ceiling joists are 2x6 [pine/fir], spaced 16" OC, and span 20 ft. The wide span makes me bit wary about putting heavy items up there or installing a ladder.

It has 2"x6" joists across at 24" on center, with 2 strong back supports perpendicular to the joists and an additional strong back support above and perpendicular to the other 2 strong backs supports. Sep 24, 2001 · the garage is 26 x 26 with a gable roof(12/4 pitch) and storage area above the joists floored with 3/4 plywood. The garage finished ceiling is 1/2 sheetrock. The garage was framed with 2" x 6" joists that span the entire 26 feet (from one side of garage to the other) with no connection to the garage
