I would start off with an observation, you need to have a valid license of the ECW sdk in order to server ECW data via GeoServer. That is said, yeah, Geoserver 2.1.1 uses imageio-ext 1.08 that uses gdal-1.4.5 (as modified by GeoSolutions).

Hello Geoffrey, ECW support on a 64-bit system like Windows 2008 (R2) is not the easiest right now. There are a few steps involved to "see" the plugin, but so far, we haven't been able to get it working with Geoserver on 64-bit.

In earlier posts I mentioned work was being done to support the latest ECW SDKs in GDAL (see this link).That work is now complete and developers are using the tools. The v4.1 ECW/JP2 SDK has higher performance for both ECW and JP2 data and supports transparency.
