    The underlying problem you report is that GDAL itself was not built with GEOS support. If you say install the CRAN OSX binary, you can check whether GEOS is available through GDAL with sf::sf_extSoftVersion(), for me not (ever) on OSX:

    Jun 09, 2016 · GDAL is currently only configured with HDF5 and netcdf support, but since GEOS is also available in Anaconda, we should try to add support for it. If we did this, gdal would list geos as a dependency, such that installing geos separately would be unnecessary.
