Oct 10, 2014 · So I need help deciding between rolling an Elementalist or Mesmer. I have a Thief and a Warrior and I wanted to play a scholar profession. I've been back and forth between the two and I just can't make up my mind. I want to play an Elementalist because of its versatility, but I love the concept of clones that a Mesmer is capable of.

Mesmer is also way more utility-based than Elementalist, at the expense of damage. Mesmer can still deal respectable damage, especially burst, but they (and a lot of other classes) really don't come close to a well-played Elementalist. On the other hand, Elementalist doesn't have the utility that Mesmers have.

One thing I really dislike about the mesmer is confusion. Confusion was sort of GW2's way of implementing GW1 mesmer punishment skills (backfire, empathy, etc.), but the problem is confusion seems to fall off waaaay too quickly, even if you have two or three mages out. I might just be bad at causing confusion though.
