The longdesc attribute was a part of the HTML 4.0 specification. When HTML5 was first published, it was labelled as “obsolete.” Later, it was released as a recommended “HTML Extension.” So it is sort-of deprecated, and sort-of available for use. As of this writing, no mainstream browsers support it, so using it will have no effect on your page.

HTML 4 provided a longdesc attribute for the img element that enabled a machine-discoverable description of an image to be linked to the image. Aug 04, 2010 · Support in tools, AT or otherwise, is an important step in ensuring access: the larger problem today with longdesc is that due to poor browser support, authors did not create longdesc content - lack of content makes AT vendors and browser vendors presume that there is little desire or need. It is the classic chicken and egg story.
