Euler–Bernoulli beam theory (also known as engineer's beam theory or classical beam theory) is a simplification of the linear theory of elasticity which provides a means of calculating the load-carrying and deflection characteristics of beams. It covers the case for small deflections of a beam that are subjected to lateral loads only. It is thus a special case of Timoshenko beam theory.

The frequency equations of Euler–Bernoulli beam with up to three step changes in cross-section and on classical and/or elastic supports were expressed as fourth order determinants equated to zero. A scheme to progressively calculate the elements of the determinant and a scheme to evaluate the roots of the frequency equation are described.Cited by: 108

Another classical method used the static or dynamical responses of the Euler‐Bernoulli beam to identify the boundary conditions. Wang and Yang 41 and Wang et al 42 proposed a direct method to identify the stiffness of elastic‐support conditions at one end of a tapered beam. A beam is a structure which has one of its dimensions much larger than the other two. The importance of beam theory in structural mechanics stems from its widespread success in practical applications. 7.1.1 Kinematic assumptions Readings: BC 5.2 Beam theory is founded on the following two key assumptions known as the Euler-Bernoulli assumptions:

An effective crack identification procedure has been developed based on the dynamic behavior of a Euler–Bernoulli cracked beam. It is very well known that the presence of a crack in a structure produces a change in its frequency response that can be used to determine the crack properties (position and size) solving what is called an inverse problem.Cited by: 28

Aim of this paper is the response evaluation of fractional visco-elastic Euler–Bernoulli beam under quasi-static and dynamic loads. Starting from the local fractional visco-elastic relationship between axial stress and axial strain, it is shown that bending moment, curvature, shear, and the gradient of curvature involve fractional operators.Cited by: 54
