There is a way of doing it without server support. Write a base64 decoder, JPEG decoder, PNG decoder and GIF decoder in Javascript. Generate a span element with inline styling to display each pixel. Emulate the altered CSS behaviour for replaced elements vs non-replaced elements.

The image isn't corrupt. This displays the image fine in Firefox and Chrome but not in IE 11. The image is less than 32 KB. I've read similar questions on IE not displaying these images, but there the problem is over 32 KB, and the images I'm using are 1 KB. Plus there is a 4 GB limit for IE 11 so it's not that.

So while IE may not have an image tag support for what you want, they do indeed, and have for a long time, support base64 in the page. To use it on the web though, since IE is the only one that supports the standard on it, is put in a sniffer up front, and serve your html to the non standard compliant browsers like Firefox, and serve up the MHT to IE.

Jan 29, 2016 · Ideally canvas elements have a origin-clean flag which is set when external images are written to the canvas. In that case, you can no longer read from it. Plus IE doesn't support image.setAttribute('crossOrigin','anonymous') which could remedy this problem (if it was supported). This mainly occurs when writing .svg images into HTML5 canvas.
