Dec 11, 2007 · No, there are currently no plans to support either IPX or AppleTalk routing. Fallback bridging can be configured to allow bridging of non-IP traffic between VLANs. So you can bridge the traffic between vlans, although i haven't done this myself, but you can't route IPX on this switch.

IPXROUTE is a Microsoft Windows NT and Windows 2000 utility for viewing and modifying Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX) routing table information when NWLink IPX/SPX-Compatible Transport is installed on machines running Windows NT and Windows 2000. You can use ipxroute to display the current IPX settings, such as frame type, IPX network numbers, and internal network number. You can also use it to display the IPX routing …

To enable IPX routing on a particular interface and to optionally select the type of encapsulation (framing), use the ipx network command in interface configuration mode. To disable IPX routing, use the no form of this command. ipx network network [encapsulation encapsulation-type [secondary]] no ipx network network [encapsulation encapsulation-type]

RIP has been implemented for both TCP/IP and IPX/SPX internetworks as RIP for IP and RIP for IPX, respectively. RIP is designed for intradomain routing (routing within a flat routing space or routing domain). Routing tables in RIP-enabled routers are calculated on the basis of the number of hops to the destination network.

IPX/SPX is compatible with local area networks (LAN) or private networks and different communication protocol functions. For example, the Routing Information Protocol (RIP) function is used to route server information, which provides optimal data routing. SPX is connection-oriented and used for routing information and connection-related functions.

Jun 19, 2018 · Windows NT cannot act as an IPX router, but IPX provides full inter network routing support. NWLink uses Routing Information Protocol over IPX (RIPX) to implement route and router discovery services used by SPX and NBIPX. When NWLink loads, it sends out a RIPX request for a network number to be used for addressing at the IPX level.

The other member of the Novell NetWare protocol suite is SPX (Sequenced Packet Exchange), which resides in the transport layer. When compared to the TCP/IP protocol suite, IPX provides routing and internetwork services similar to IP, and SPX provides transport layer services similar to TCP.

Because of IPX/SPX's prevalence in LANs in the 1990s, Microsoft added support for the protocols into Windows' networking stack, starting with Windows for Workgroups and Windows NT. Microsoft even named their implementation " NWLink ", implying that the inclusion of the layer 3/4 transports provided NetWare connectivity.Based on: XNS
