Jun 28, 2009 · I've been trying to figure out if vmware products (VMware Server and VMware ESX) are supported on Itanium servers, and from what I've read so far, it seems that the answer is a 'no'. I just wish to get a confirmation on this. In particular I was looking at using VMware …

Feb 19, 2004 · Well the key issue is that ESX is fundamentally a ring 0 monitor that arbitrates access to underlying cpu resources. That would require that your guest operating systems to also be 64bit capable or vmware would have to implement a cpu emulation mode which would be somewhat counterproductive.

Virtualization support for Itanium processor

Re: VMware Support for Itanium Servers The long answer is NO as it doesn't make any sense. The industry is dropping Itanium Vs endorsing it. Ten years ago Itanium was supposed to be the next generation Intel architecture, right now Intel is just waiting (and looking forward) to pull the plug as soon as they can. (From VMWare Employee)

I know, HP-UX OS runs on 64-bit HP9000 PA-RISC platform and HP Itanium. I think, if I assign some HP Itanium machines as the VMware ESX hosts then probably we could create a virutal HP-UX server, not sure Vmware ESX support HP-UX guest or not.

VMware never supported Itanium. They only support x86 and x64. Windows Server 2008 R2 is supported on Itanium. That's the current version of Windows and it will be supported for a good few years (10 at least, I think).
