It sounds like you don't have a proper Jekyll configuration specifying your source directory.. You can build things by specifying the config via parameters, like so: jekyll serve --source assets --destination public But it's probably better to grab a _config.yml example and go from there. The very scenario you're facing is described in the Basic Usage docs.

A big one for me is support for Haml. Regular Jekyll uses Liquid for templates and pages. This makes a lot of sense for a hosted setup like GitHub Pages, since it limits users to a small set of safe operations. But for my own blog, I found this way too limiting. Also, I enjoy using Haml.

This gem is really just a collection of those techniques so they're easy to find and you can get back to creating your site using the slickest markup.
