Some games, like the Mass Effect games, have had gamepad controls modded back in because sufficient code for gamepad compatibility remained in the PC port for the gaps to be filled in by modders. Unfortunately it doesn't seem that Knights of the Old Republic 1 was one of these, as I can't find a gamepad mod for it anywhere.
