KVM: nVMX: Enable unrestricted guest mode support Now that we provide EPT support, there is no reason to torture our guests by hiding the relieving unrestricted guest mode feature. We just need to relax CR0 checks for always-on bits as PE and PG can now be switched off.

"Unrestricted Guest" feature is added in the VMX specification. Intel Westmere and onwards processors will support this feature. It allows kvm guests to run real mode and unpaged mode code natively in the VMX mode when EPT is turned on. With the unrestricted guest there is no need to emulate the guest real mode …

Aug 06, 2013 · If you're running a guest on an Intel machine without unrestricted mode support, the failure can be most likely due to the guest entering an invalid state for Intel VT. For example, the guest maybe running in big real mode ... but it is black for graphic mode. if I use virtual machine without KVM, it is OK, but very slow. thanks again. Offline ...

kvm-hello-world is a very simple example program to demonstrate the use of KVM. It acts as a very simple VM host, and runs a trivial real-mode program in a VM. I tested it on Intel processors with the VMX hardware virtualization extensions.

My initial assumption is that KVM is choking (as I think it should) on rollover of EIP..an unusual circumstance to be sure, I doubt many test this path. We can likely patch QEMU to handle this condition as it does with TCG.
