For many current platforms, large file macros or appropriate compiler flags have to be set to build a library with support for large files. This is handled automatically in netCDF 3.6. A Note About Large File Support. The classic CDF file format (referred as CDF-1) has been solely in use by NetCDF library through version 3.5.1. Large File Support It is possible to write netCDF files that exceed 2 GiByte on platforms that have "Large File Support" (LFS). Such files are platform-independent to other LFS platforms, but trying to open them on an older platform without LFS yields a "file too large" error. Without LFS, no files larger than 2 GiBytes can be used.

netCDF as its base file structure. Earlier this year, I was able to successfully integrate DODS client libraries into NCL, giving users access to remote files. Recently, users have been asking for large file support ("lfs", >2Gb) within NCL. I've also been able to integrate this support.
