I am currently in need of some advice on how to safely support long work that extends out of the drawtube of a manual lathe. Now currently I'm making parts at around 3ft long and since that's about the length of my drawtube I know I can make what I've heard others call a "spider" that attaches to the end of the drawtube which has 4 set screws to center the bar up.

Nov 04, 2011 · I dont have a good picture of it, but I built a heavy duty pedistal that mounts to the floor in different positions in front of my Victor lathe for running long shatfs through the spindle. I used the roller steady rest from another lathe to mount on the pedistal and support the outer end.
