Sep 08, 2008 · In essence, how does 64-bit LBA work, and how does it help overcome the "2TB barrier", which I thought was a limitation of the MBR partition table format, and not an inherent limitation of an ATA disk. After all, (2^48)*512 = 144.xxx PB, which is the max size of a 48-bit LBA drive with 512Byte sectors.

I was able to boot with 2 256 GB disks and 5 3TB virtual disks attached, but after adding the ZFS file system to the larger disks (which I assume must be setting up a 64 bit LBA), the next boot failed. The large disks actually seemed to work perfectly fine before the reboot, since the OS was handling it rather than VirtualBox.

First the RAID card has to support disks (arrays) or logical volumes larger than 2 terabytes (TB). This is usually done by having the card support 64 bit Logical Block Addressing (LBA). Most cards and OS's unless they are very new only support 32 bit LBA's. This is what limits them to 2TB's (2^32 * 512 ~ 2TB).
