If he built OpenLDAP from source, then of course it had no SASL support since he says he didn't install SASL until *after* he installed OpenLDAP. Obviously you can't compile with SASL support if the SASL devel packages weren't already present at compile time.

The SASL framework allows different mechanisms to be used to authenticate a user to the server, depending on what mechanism is enabled in both client and server applications. SASL also creates a layer for encrypted (secure) sessions. Using GSS-API, Directory Server utilizes Kerberos tickets to authenticate sessions and encrypt data.

Postfix SASL Howto

    http://www.postfix.org/SASL_README.html
Before Postfix version 2.3, Postfix had support only for Cyrus SASL. To find out what SASL implementations are compiled into Postfix, use the following commands: % postconf -a (SASL support in the SMTP server) % postconf -A (SASL support in the SMTP+LMTP client) These commands are available only with Postfix version 2.3 and later.

OpenLDAP, OpenSSL, SASL and KerberosV HOWTO

The development packages only have to be installed on the host where all the packages are built, not on the client/server hosts themselves. The libopenafs-dev package is needed by all software's that is going to be compiled to use some functionality that OpenAFS provides. That include the OpenAFS KerberosV support software and the OpenAFS PAM module below.
