Jan 06, 2018 · Although the 486 is theoretically supported by the modern Linux kernel, this is not true on the distribution and package level. For example, Debian has dropped support for older 586 32-bit CPUs as of 2016. Thus, the oldest supported x86 CPU by Debian is the 686.

Dec 12, 2012 · When I tried getting linux running on a real 486, it was pretty close to impossible with every distribution that claimed 486 support. I'm guessing they test on qemu (486 emulation seems to emulate something more than a real 486). Not one of the maintainers seemed to care. I might add, Debian was the only actual linux to work.5/5(464)

Multi-core and multi-CPU support in 32-bit kernel. To guarantee compatibility with non-PAE processors, the 32-bit versions of Linux Mint Debian come with a 486 kernel by default. This kernel does not support SMP, and as a consequence is only able to detect one core and one CPU.
