Aug 17, 2013 · I ran into the same thing when I moved from OpenSUSE to Mint. Mint is Ubuntu based and someone at Ubuntu thinks firewire devices are more dangerous than USB devices. So you have to be root to capture your video. Unless you have a USB camera, but even that won't help because the video programs I've used so far in Linux don't work with USB.

Oct 16, 2007 · I had posted an issue in the Final Cut forum regarding it and they all jumped on me for it being an issue with Canon cameras. I had done some tests and debugging and found it's not the camera, but actually the Firewire drivers themselves that seem flaky. For example, you can run Linux on the same machine and transfer the video without issue.
