Feb 12, 2013 · You're right that PCIe 3.0 was disabled because of reliability issues with the current generation of PCIe controllers, such as the one in the X79 chipset platform. There exists an NVIDIA tool on Windows to opt-in to unsupported PCIe 3.0 support, but there isn't a Linux equivalent to that tool yet.

A quick survey on PCI USB 3.0 cards reveals most of them is running the VIA VL80x chipsets, which is told to be supported by Linux since quite some years. As this is a PCIe chipset, there might be some issues because of PCI-PCIe bridge chips, but those are likely also supported well.

May 24, 2017 · M.2 can be PCI-e or Sata and you are right, it's a physical form-factor. mSata is a different form-factor and it has the same interface as WWAN cards. I recently bought a Dell Latitude E5470 laptop wich came with a Samsung PM871 M.2 Sata SSD. The M.2 slot on the Dell doubles up as PCI-e so I took out the PM871 and put in a 950 Pro.
