Feb 24, 2013 · Do you request the certificate for Lync Edge server or Reverse Proxy? The Edge server didn't support wildcard certificate with asterisk in the SN or SAN. But the Reverse Proxy support the wildcard certificate.

Hence it is still best practice to avoid wildcard-only entries for the server FQDNs in any new Lync Server deployments. Realistically the addition of wildcard support is target more towards future Office 365 support for Lync Phone Edition and this is the first step in achieving that.
