Jul 06, 2016 · That's just my opinion of course, but with that being said, what is the difference between mainstream support and extended support? On Microsoft's Life cycle page, they show that mainstream support for Windows 7 Service Pack 1 will run out January 2015, but extended support will last until January 2020.

Extended Support does not allow companies to get free (well, no additional charge) telephone support from Microsoft. Companies have to pay for phone support when a product is in Extended Support time frame.
