This is mainly due to two reasons: The expense of licensing DRM technology or having MediaPortal certified by CableLabs. The conflict between the closed and restrictive nature of DRM and the open and free nature of MediaPortal and our community.

Support for CableCARD tuners was added to MediaPortal 1.5 Pre-Release. A CableCARD tuner is used like a standard ATSC tuner, except it can decrypt channels. DRM and Limitations. These days almost all cable TV is encrypted to control access to the content. Some cable providers even encrypt local channels that have traditionally not been encrypted.

Sep 15, 2017 · As it says in the first post: MediaPortal only supports receiving channels that are marked as "copy freely". Any channels that Charter has protected by marking as "copy once" will not be viewable or recordable.

CableCARD has finally given Americans (and some Canadians) the ability to easily use their HTPC to receive encrypted cable TV. Pretty much anything that comes over CableCARD is encrypted. That's the point of CableCARD, to decrypt the QAM signals. Copy Protection ("Copy Freely", "Copy Once", "Copy Never") is a different beast, and requires extra support beyond the decryption that the CableCARD tuner does. HDHomeRun Prime doesn't support that. HDHR Prime is just a tuner.

Oct 17, 2012 · Media Portal is a great Media Center platform with client and server options. Today the MediaPortal team have announced they are working on introducing CableCARD support into MediaPortal. This will be a big step for the platform but there are some limitations, it will only ever support TV shows tagged Copy freely due to DRM restrictions.
