Upgraded to VirtualBox 5.0 - everything is great, except lost the mic. Audio works, no errors in log, but microphone does not pick up any sounds. Installed a Win 8.1 guest from scratch just to make sure - identical situation. Extension pack and guest additions installed in all cases. Tried Core Audio and ICH97.

Microphone is enumerated by the guest, but it is always silent. On occasions fiddling with microphone driver enumeration (i.e. toggling "Show unplugged recording devices" several times, going to its properties, etc) can even crash VirtualBox (rare, happened to me only twice).

Jul 23, 2013 · Fixing Audio in Linux Guests VirtualBox. I use VirtualBox to use Ubuntu in a Windows host environment. It’s not perfect, but it’s free and it works fairly well. The one major issue I have is the audio in the Linux (Ubuntu) guest. Sometimes, especially after using RDP to log into the Windows host, the audio in the Ubuntu guest gets screwed up.
