    This is the shortest way I've found to test for full File API support. It's maybe misleading as it returns false in Safari 5, which actually has decent support for the File API, but misses some key objects (FileReader) and methods (File.prototype.slice). In this case, it's a bit more nuanced than true or false, as you can still get some useful work done with the parts that are implemented.

    Checking for the existence of FileReader is the correct way to go about this. FileReader is an official part of the File Api. I would combine this with Modernizr. Drag and Drop support is slated for release 1.2. You should be able to grab the source on GitHub and start working with this now.
