Jun 09, 2010 · Unfortunately the NIC that VMware emulates does not support Multicast (some intel nic). I ran into this problem running (Junos - thats juniper OS) on vms for testing porpuses, routing protocols that used multicast traffic will not work. And had to be tweaked to use Unicast which made it all the much difficult.

I have fielded a number of questions on VMware’s multicast support and figure it is time I did a short blog on it. There is a good white paper on the topic on the VMware site called Multicast Performance on vSphere 5.0 that deals with performance changes that have been made to enhance multicast support in vSphere 5. guest OSes can receive multicast traffic from the host machine. some services running on the guest OS (eg: port 80) can be port forwarded, so it's visible on the host and other machines. I tried vmware player, it doesn't support multicast at all. I managed to set up port forwarding with Virtualbox, but multicast doesn't work seem to work.
