Rigid metallic conduit and electrical metallic tubing both require support. Conduit should be fastened by straps to the ceiling or wall, or supported on hangers from the ceiling at least every 10 feet (Figure 11). Conduit should be fastened within 3 feet of a box (5 feet of unbroken lengths are allowed if structural members do not permit fastening within 3 feet).

Support of conduit bodies — PVC conduit can support nonmetallic conduit bodies that aren’t larger than the largest trade size of an entering raceway. These conduit bodies can’t support luminaires or other equipment, and are not permitted to contain devices other than splicing devices permitted by Sec. 110.14(B) and Sec. 314.16(C)(2) [Sec. 352.10(H)].

Nothing in the NEC states that you cannot use the same supports for conduit as for other systems. Although Section 300.11(B) generally prohibits the use of conduit as support for anything else, it does not mention the use of water pipe or other systems (other than ceiling grids and wires) for support of conduit.

Conduit can be supported on surfaces with pipe straps made in one-hole and two-hole types. On wooden surfaces, wood screws secure the straps in position. On masonry surfaces, machine screws that turn into lead expansion anchors can be used. Wooden plugs should never be used because no matter how well seasoned a plug appears to be, it usually will dry out to some extent and loosen in the hole.
