NetBSD-SoC: GPT aware boot loader support

    http://netbsd-soc.sourceforge.net/projects/gpt/
The NetBSD operating system has support for GPT disks via dkwedges, but can't be boot of such a disk. There are two standard ways to load kernel off the GPT: use EFI, or use legacy BIOS bootstrapping with GPT support.

But the NetBSD kernel can generate wedges automatically when a disk is attached. Most NetBSD architectures will scan for MBR (PC BIOS Master Boot Record) and GPT (GUID Partition Table). There is also support for standard BSD disklabels but which is currently disabled. A GPT can be displayed, created and edited with the GPT command:

Nov 28, 2018 · I share here a quick guide I wrote a while ago about manually installing NetBSD on UEFI firmware with a GPT partition table, initially recently tested anfd fixed by myself on bare metal. Thanks to @pin for having tested it and cooperated fixing typos and inconsistencies no sooner had I posted it on DaemonForums create a new GPT disklabel gpt destroy wd0 gpt create -f wd0 create partitions gpt ...

NetBSD 6, GPT disc and grub2 NetBSD

Unfortunately NetBSD sysinst doesn’t support GPT discs right now so I made a little headache for myself. I looked for the information and found that there was GSoC project to create GPT aware booloader for BIOS systems several years ago. My system has UEFI and Fedora uses grub2 bootloader.

GPT/UEFI booting - NetBSD

Feb 28, 2017 · I know that setting up a disk with GPT partitions and UEFI booting isn’t supported (yet) in NetBSD. But it seems close and I’d appreciate some hints. Picked up a cheap laptop that only supports UEFI booting on the internal eMMC disk. Although it has Legacy boot support, that only works on devices attached via USB.

Google Summer of Code: GPT bootloader - NetBSD Blog

The NetBSD already has support for GPT disks via dkwedges, but can't boot off a GPT partitioned disk. My GSoC project is to implement a GPT aware bootloader for the NetBSD operating system by extending its existing MBR/disklabel BIOS-based multistaged kernel loader.

The removal of outdated networking components such as ISDN and all of its drivers; The installer is now capable of performing GPT UEFI installations. Dramatically improved support for userland sanitizers, as well as the option to build all of NetBSD's userland using them for bug-finding.
