The Bochs VGA BIOS supports, to an extent, the VBE specification. Since Bochs only emulates a VGA card down to the hardware level (and a Cirrus graphics card if you enable it, but that is not tied in with the Bochs VBE extensions), it emulates very simple graphics hardware that the VBE BIOS can drive.

Jan 14, 2004 · The problem is that Windows 98 (and 95 - not sure about others) don't come with a plain VESA VBE video driver. I haven't found one that works for them, either. I have Deiban GNU/Linux with XFree86 running at 1024x768 and 24bpp color right now using the vesa driver, so I know that the VESA VBE support works.

Notes about VESA usage. Since Bochs 1.4 it is possible to use VESA graphics. There are some limitations in the current implementation, but in general it should work ok (we have run several test programs, the XFree86 VESA display driver, etc.) In order to use VESA VBE, you need to enable it in your bochsrc by setting the vga option to vbe.

The Bochs VBE display works fine with 256 oder more colours, but there's no generic driver available for Win98. With the SuperVGA driver distributed with Win98 you can get a resolution of 800x600, but only 16 colours. Bochs 2.2 also supports the Cirrus SVGA display.

In Bochs-config vbe is enabled (vga: extension=vbe) . bochsout.txt says "VBE Bochs Display Extension Enabled". The questions: Why the videomemory is from A0000 and not from E0000? Why is there only 128Kb videomemory? (It should be: 1024*768*3 bytes, i.e. 2.25 Mb) This way no graphics can be done in PM without paging or I am doing something wrong.
