Nov 13, 2017 · I expected floating point precision to be preserved as setPixels takes an array of Color, which has floating point components, but it looks like I only get 8 bit precision. This is a problem as the texture is used as an input to a displacement shader which requires full floating point precision, or I get visible banding effects.

May 03, 2015 · i have the same problem it worked before on my chrome book but now when i enter the site it says i have "no floating texture support" how do i fix this There is nothing to do with this issue. If it worked previously, it is a browser update to blame.

Basically floating point texture is a texture in which data is of floating point type :) That is it is not clamped. So if you have 3.14f in your texture you will read the same value in the shader. You may create them with different numbers of channels. Also you may crate 16 or 32 bit textures depending on the format. e.g.

Apr 25, 2018 · According to this page floating point texture support is required since GL 3.0. Before that there's the GL_ARB_texture_float and GL_ARB_half_float_pixel extensions. I think we should check these since MG runs on GL 2.0+ (with framebuffer support), so there's no guarantee FP format is supported. Did you try those extensions?

On further research I found that the extension "ARB_texture_float" is not currently provided by Mesa. I do run Mesa HEAD using a GEM enabled Linux kernel and the latest i915 XOrg and DRM drivers (all HEAD releases). Are there any plans to support floating point textures in Mesa in the future?
