If you want to use open source drivers, AMD is the way to go, but if you game and want max performance, Nvidia is better. AMD's open source drivers are much more developed than Nvidia open source drivers but Nvidia's proprietary drivers beat any of AMD's drivers. Here you can see some benchmarks for more info.

Jun 16, 2018 · allanitomwesh: I think AMD allows Nvidia to go so far away on the linux department because they have PS4 and XBone so SteamOS+linux isn't a priority for them. In recent times the AMD drivers have gotten better by leaps and bounds. It's not entirely wrong; Nvidia still has better compatibility with games. Yes, if the support is good, the performance is fine, but if it's not (which still happens sometimes, especially for older games), you might never get an acceptable result.
