Disability Support Services acts as an advocate for students with disabilities and works with 500-600 students per semester. In addition to helping students understand university policies and practices, we assist students in addressing personal and academic concerns. We supply referrals to other university offices when appropriate.

The purpose of this section is to inform you of the disability support services available at Oakland University. The decision to utilize available services is an individual choice. Students tend to achieve higher levels of academic success when they demonstrate initiative and assertiveness, begin preparing for college early, and are aware of their strengths, weaknesses and appropriate accommodations.

The Disability Support Services Office (DSS) assists current and prospective student’s who are requesting accommodations to access the programs and services at Oakland University. Accommodations are determined through an interactive, individualized, case by case interview between DSS and the student.

The Disability Support Services office provides many accommodations and auxiliary aids for students with disabilities. Examples include: braille books, audio books, quiet testing with reader/scribe, sign language interpreters, enlarged materials, adaptive furniture and various assistive technology and software.
