Every time I restart Octave, the first time I run a program based on XLSREAD, I receive the warning: Detected XLS interfaces: warning: No Java support found (no Java JRE? no Java pkg installed AND loaded?) If I run again the program, there is no more warning. I thought this was because I needed to expressly load the package Java.

A new Octave session will also display the information Octave was configured for "x86_64-w64-mingw32" for the 64-bit version found on the unofficial file list (I don't have 32-bit installed, so I can't confirm what the message would be if it's 32-bit).

If no working external interface is found, Octave falls back to OCT (= native Octave code). The error you see means that although only COM was requested, and hitherto the Java based interfaces themselves are disabled, Octave nevertheless searches for Java. That shouldn't be needed, admittedly, but normally doesn't harm.
