I have also tried the app SpeechNotes, which employs google voice typing, and it reacts the same. The microphone is working, as is evinced by movement on the indicator. (The line at the bottom). I am 66, my wife is 65, and whilst not unintelligent I have to admit ignorance of mobile phone technology.

Personally, I try to save data any way that I can, so to stave off unnecessary usage, I use the GoogleOfflineVoice to limit the amount of data consumed by voice typing. If Chrome is up to date and you still can't enable Voice typing check to see if a language for the Doc is selected that isn't supported for Voice typing: Clicking File > Language. If a language for the Doc is selected that isn't supported, change it to another language that is supported.
