Mar 14, 2010 · As you can see, OpenFiler or Freenas cannot be used as iscsi target for Windows 2008 Clusters because they do not provide persistent reservation. This feature might be available in the next release as more people will encounter the problem.

Jan 20, 2010 · Please note that if you’re looking for a free filer/nas solution that supports iSCSI 3 (persistent reservations) for a windows 2008 cluster, then you might prefer FreeNAS. Openfiler does not support this out of the box, technically it’s possible, but not from the GUI. Check the openfiler forums for more info.

Buffalo (yea, I know), has a $1000 device with iSCSI support, but they say it will not work for 2008 failover clustering. I'm interested in seeing something suitable for failover in a production environment, but with very low IO requirements. (Clustering, say, a 30GB DB.) Dec 27, 2011 · Please also note that there are certain issues with regards to using openfiler in clustering in windows 2008. Please read on "SCSI 3 Persistent Reservation" as a requirement for windows clustering which as of the moment openfiler does not "officially" support.

While most legacy applications can function using the RESERVE/RELEASE commands, some newer applications, notably Windows 2008 cluster, require SPC(SCSI Primary Command)-3 Persistent Reservation (PR) commands to function properly. Openfler iSCSI SAN-4-V will honor initiator PR commands where necessary.
