Oct 26, 2016 · The good new is that I was able to pull multicast over the VPN on VLC by configuring a static IP on a laptop bridge to my windows ovpn client. The video is pretty choppy so I'm trying to figure out if it is a bandwidth issue at my house or if it is the overhead of the VPN.

My OpenVZ server runs OpenVPN:UDP. My application should allow multicast packets to flow through the VPN and be recieved by any other client connected to the VPN, however it doesn't. I did a tcpdump on the OpenVPN tun0 adapter, no multicast traffic is sent, however on the sender side, wireshark detects traffic being sent.

If you want OpenVPN to be an multicast router you need to intercept IGMP messages and use them to alter the internal routing table. So, right now, openvpn will treat a multicast as a broadcast but it could be potentially smarter and limit the number of receivers on a multicast message if it kept track of IGMP messages that tell it which client wants to be a member of which multicast groups.
