The Marvell® Avastar™ 88W8764 is a highly integrated 4×4 wireless local area network (WLAN) system-on-chip (SoC); the Marvell SmilePlug is based on it. Like the Libertas WNIC, it also seems to contain an ARM9-CPU with very much closed source firmware running on it. This is not so cool.

Just delivering it on the cd does not mean it is maintained by the community it also does not mean, there is a maintained repository for packages, without it openwrt is only half as good. Basically this is as bad as devlivering their own fw. In my opinion the whole thing is just a marketing gag.

Jun 02, 2016 · OpenWrt. Armada 38x family has been added into OpenWrt since version 14.07. OpenWrt 14.07 pre-built binaries and source code patches for A38x family can be downloaded from Marvell extranet. Armada 38x family has been added into OpenWrt public release since version 15.05.[ OpenWrt 15.05 source code can be downloaded from OpenWrt GIT.
