My question is, since I never saw the option in my audio manager, does my audio chip's optical SPDIF support true 5.1? Mar 13, 2013 · Before you answer you have to look at my setup first.. Audio/video sources: directv receiver, ps3, seperate Samsung blu ray player. Sending those signals to tv via hdmi. Samsung HDTV with 3 hdmi inputs. No hdmi outputs and 1 optical output. Audio surround sound amplifier: 5.1 channel Panasonic SC-PT760. 1 hdmi output. 1 optical input.

Oct 16, 2012 · In my own case, my old 5.1 amplifier could NOT handle a normal bitstream output from the blu-ray player when a 7.1 channel movie was playing. The new 7.1 amplifier (with 5.1 speaker outputs) does handle the normal bitstream output via Optical cable, AND it also supports the blu-ray player’s “Bistream – Audiophile” output setting.

Jun 09, 2010 · Optical cable does not support HD audio formats. The only method for getting HD audio formats (DTS or Dolby HD) is via HDMI. Change your PS3 to output audio over HDMI instead of the optical and drop the optical cable. The PS3 decodes the DTS and Dolby internally so you will set it to output linear PCM.

Dec 22, 2007 · In regards to getting 5.1 surround sound on your receiver for football games, I am assuming that you are subscribing to High Definition because your satellite receiver has the optical and coaxial connections. The good news is that HD programming supports 5.1 surround sound, so you should get 5.1 while watching anything in HD.

Apr 29, 2016 · At least for a long time, Samsung TVs did not send 5.1 audio from HDMI inputs to the optical connection. I see that Samsung is now making soundbar models that support surround sound, so it's possible that at least some newer Samsung models might be sending 5.1 …
