A Hardware Security Module (HSM) is a device that can be attached to a server system to manage digital keys. It provides both logical and physical protection of these materials from non-authorized use. HSM support within RUEI is based on OpenSSL. A detailed description of the OpenSSL project is available at http://www.openssl.org/.

In an Oracle Key Vault installation with HSM enabled, the HSM stores a top-level encryption key, thereby acting as a Root of Trust (RoT) that protects encryption keys used by OKV. HSMs are built with specialized tamper-resistant hardware which is harder to access than normal servers.

HSM integration is limited to new installations of Oracle Key Vault. This can be a fresh installation of Oracle Key Vault Release 12.2 BP 1 and later. The latest release is the recommended path as it contains the latest enhancements.

encrypted Oracle servers can leverage Oracle Key Vault, a security hardened software appliance that provides centralized key and wallet management for the enterprise. It uses industry standard OASIS Key Management Interoperability Protocol (KMIP) for communications.

The support for UEFI BIOS mode allows the installation of Oracle Key Vault on servers that exclusively support UEFI BIOS only, such as Oracle X7-2 Server. OKV can be installed on Oracle X7–2 servers as a standalone server or in a High Availability (HA) configuration. For more information, see Oracle Key Vault Administrator's Guide.
