It doesn't. Instead make errors out with ../jpeg-6b/jpeglib.h: No such file or directory. I'm not sure how that hack is supposed to work. Am I supposed to compile GD myself in that directory? Seems like if it's not picking up where it's already installed on the server it's not going to pick up my own compiled version.
