WordPress currently supports PHP versions newer than 5.2.4. We have team members who contribute to PHP core so will always support even additional newer versions of PHP that WordPress might not even support yet depending on the timing between PHP core releases and WordPress core releases.
PHP 5.4 series will be the last versions to support Windows XP and Windows 2003. We will not provide binary packages for these Windows versions anymore after PHP 5.4. For users upgrading from PHP 5.3 there is a migration guide available here, detailing the changes between those releases and PHP 5.4.0.

Deprecated versions don't receive updates or security patches, so running them in production should be avoided. Dynatrace is committed to supporting each PHP version for at least as long as the vendor supports it (in most cases, support extends for at least six months beyond this point).

If your site is using PHP 5.3 or older, you will need to update and confirm your site is compatible with PHP Versions 5.4 or higher.; MySQL/MariaDB are using updated hashes. The o lder versions of MySQL use an incompatible hashing algorithm. Mysql 5.6 and later use an updated secured hash.
